The first step towards buying tax lien certificates is to identify your goals followed by your resources. For example, a person whose goal is to replace their job or supplement their income would have a completely different strategy than someone who has a goal of building their retirement. Also, your resources both in terms of your capital and time also determine your investment strategy. For example, a person with limited capital would most likely focus on tax lien certificates that can be purchased through an internet auction since that would limit their expense both in travel and time off work.

The minimum amount of money needed to get started really is dependent on the purpose or goal of your investing. Also the minimum amount will also vary depending on where you invest. Real estate property taxes usually represent about 1 or 2 percent of the real estates tax assessed value. So if a property has an assessed value of $100,000 taxes would be about $1000 per year. So the amount to purchase a tax lien certificate in one state or county compared to another will vary with the value of the property.

You will need certified funds in order to purchase your tax lien certificate or tax deed and it usually has to be posted before the end of the day. For internet tax lien certificate and tax deed auctions you must deposit your funds before the bidding takes place and that can be done online.

Customer Reviews

"I purchased 3 tax lien certificates at an internet auction for Miami-Dade County, Florida. All three were buildable vacant lots in moderate income neighborhoods. The prices were: (1)$1,018.86 (2) $1,224.90 (3) $1,654.82. I got 18% interest on all of them. I placed 39 bids in total."
